ESWL (extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy)

This is a procedure that uses a magnified sound wave to shatter stones within the kidney and ureter. It is usually carried out as an outpatient procedure with the patient awake.

There may be some discomfort during this procedure however light pain relief is usually all that is necessary.
