Initial investigations should identify the patients that require urological referral:

  • Positive Dipstix test, preferably on at least two occasions. Also check for protein in urine as this may point towards a nephrological cause for the haematuria
  • Urine microscopy demonstrating
  • >3 RBC's/ HPF of urine
  • Mid stream urine for culture
  • Urine cytology examination
  • Full blood count, urea and creatinine estimation
