when to delay referral
Referral should be delayed in the following circumstances:
- Menstruating women
- Women with proven urinary tract infection. If two or more infections occur after adequate treatment with antibiotics, urological review should be sought
- If false positive Dipstix results are suspected. It is good practice to confirm any positive Dipstix result with urine microscopy to demonstrate >3 RBC's/ HPF of urine
- Exclude exercise-induced haematuria. Commonly found in long distance runners and soldiers in training. Repeat the urinalysis 48 hours after exercise episode.
