metabolic stone analysis

Q | what is MSA?

A | You may have been recently diagnosed with kidney stones and undergone treatment to remove these stones by your urologist (surgery, lithotripsy etc). Once you have had a problem with kidney stones, your risk of further stone episodes may be as high as 50% within ten years.

The purpose of metabolic stone analysis (MSA) is to analyse your "biochemical and dietary makeup" to ascertain whether there are any specific factors that may be increasing your risk of further stones and to advise you as to how to reduce that risk. MSA assessment is routinely carried out as part of your acute stone episode/treatment. It will follow on from your recent surgery or lithotripsy to complete the treatment episode. MSA is part of a fully integrated approach to stone management. It is not a screening procedure and therefore is not carried out in isolation.
