robotic partial nephrectomy

after the operation

You are usually discharged home within 3-4 days after robotic assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, following catheter removal. You will be given antibiotics to take home and there are small dressings over the wound sites that should be kept dry for 48hrs. There will be some pain especially on coughing, sneezing, etc. that may last for some weeks. It is advised that heavy lifting and straining be avoided during the first 3-4 weeks. You should not drive for at least a 3 weeks and should be able to perform an emergency stop when driving. Any medications that you normally take can be resumed after discharge from hospital.

Four weeks after the operation you will be invited to attend the outpatient department at which time the results of the pathology examination of the cancer will be discussed with you. Longer term, you will probably be required to have CT scans and blood tests at intervals to ensure continuing good kidney function and check that there is no recurrence of disease. This usually is carried out for 3-5 years according to international guidelines.
