Pelvi-uretric junction (PUJ) obstruction is defined as an obstruction of the flow of urine from the kidney to the ureter tube leading down to the bladder. The resultant backpressure within the kidney may lead to progressive kidney (renal) damage and deterioration. The condition is frequently encountered by children and adults and affects 1 in 500 of the population. Adults may also present with UPJ obstruction following previous surgery or other disorders that can cause inflammation of the upper urinary tract or due to a crossing blood vessel that act similar to someone stepping on a hosepipe. Pyeloplasty is the operation of choice to remedy this problem. Robotic assisted laparoscopic pyeloplasty is offered as a superior option to perform this option as it allows micro dissection of the kidney and excellent reconstruction of the kidney with good recovery after operation.
